One of the easiest ways for people living in Pittsburgh to get into debt starts with the swipe of a plastic card. Massive credit card debt has caused many to file for bankruptcy, but there is a simple tactic that may help others avoid bankruptcy if they act fast.
Many experts believe that the disconnect between the physical cash used to pay a debt and swiping a plastic credit card has financially ruined many people. Debt quickly accumulates and it can reach into the hundreds of dollars before the first bill is seen.

According to a recent report from RealtyTrac, Pittsburgh saw the highest national increase in the number of foreclosures from the fourth quarter of 2011 to the first quarter of 2012. Other cities throughout the nation saw increases as well: 26 out of the 50 largest metropolitan areas saw inclines from quarter to quarter, while 114 of 212 metro areas with a population greater than 200,000 experienced similar increases.
This data may surprise some homeowners, who believed the economy was slowly returning to normal. Experts have noted that one of the likely causes of this increase is the dormant state of many home foreclosure filings over the past year. The nation's largest mortgage lenders were essentially forced to put their foreclosures on hold while a settlement was reached over foreclosure abuse.

Families in Pittsburgh know how hard it can be to cover the unexpected costs of a sudden medical issue. Many have been forced into bankruptcy due to the incredible debt that can be racked up in a matter of days, especially without health insurance coverage. Even with insurance, out-of-pocket costs can cause serious financial strife. Unfortunately for some families, declaring bankruptcy is the only option to help them shed bad debts.
One 6-year-old boy took matters into his own hands and opened a lemonade stand in his neighborhood to help with the massive amount of medical bills that his father's illness was creating. According to the family, the man has seminoma -- a rare form of cancer. He is currently going through chemotherapy. Though his family has medical insurance, the family is still accumulating thousands in out-of-pocket costs.

Pittsburgh was struck by the recession just as hard as many other cities. Many were forced to file for bankruptcy, having lost jobs and a large chunk of the value on their homes. It is likely that the bankruptcy proceedings for those who filed for Chapter 7 are over and done with, but that does not mean that the bankruptcy does not linger on their credit reports.
Credit card bills could have been a serious issue before the bankruptcy, but now free of debt, you may want to try again -- hopefully exercising more responsibility.

Many Americans use credit cards. According to reports, 80 million of those consumers receive rewards for using their credit cards. While credit card rewards may sound good to those who use them, experts are worried that this sort of system could be causing some people to accumulate debt faster than it can be paid off.
In most cases, rewards cards carry a higher interest rate than normal cards. This, combined with the likelihood that the card has an annual fee, can cause some serious trouble for those who are trying to get out of debt. While an annual fee can vary, interest rates tend to stay the same, unless otherwise noted by the terms of the credit card.

With a massive settlement now approved, five major banks will likely be using a portion of the $25 billion sum to assist struggling homeowners in the Pittsburgh area. It took months for five major banks and state and federal agencies to approve the settlement, but it looks like $25 billion will be paid by the major banks in order to alleviate some of the stresses of home foreclosure.
Many are not satisfied with this settlement though. According to the Housing and Urban Development Department, the Justice Department and the majority of state attorneys general, this agreement is an appropriate punishment for allegations that banks were allegedly approving foreclosures on homes without properly reviewing the paperwork.

When the word "bankruptcy" comes to mind, many think of the possible ways that a person could find him or herself in such a financial state. Some might think that a person has amassed too much credit card debt or that a job has been lost. Perhaps a divorce has left them with little money left, but there is another form of debt that many in Pittsburgh forget about.
It comes in the form of medical bills, which can cost a patient a large amount of money and financial freedom if they are not properly addressed. It can also lead to intimidating calls from collections agencies.

According to reports, people in Pennsylvania and throughout the nation used credit cards in 2011 at a rate that is much higher than it was during the past two years. This may seem scary to some, as a large amount of Americans used the past several years to remove debt rather than to add to it.
This seems to have been the case for most, so why the sudden increase in credit card debt?

Some homeowners in Pennsylvania have been worried about losing their houses to foreclosure for several years now, some since the recession began. But an interesting turn of events may cause recent buyers of homes facing foreclosure to lose the sales that they have already completed.
According to an advocacy group known as Action United, the sale of foreclosed properties should be temporarily ceased, because state courts are currently considering a case that could see some previous sales overturned. Members of this housing advocacy group were recently at a sheriff's sale in Allegheny County, distributing pamphlets and informing potential buyers that they could lose a home they purchased.

Recent reports on the amount of debt that Americans are creating should have some feeling slightly alarmed. According to one credit card industry observation company, consumer debt in the United States last year was at the highest point it has been in a decade.
Consumer debt includes both revolving and non-revolving debts. Credit card debt is a major part of revolving debt. In December 2011, it increased by 4.1 percent, according to the Federal Reserve Board.
